Yams Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN yams market totaled $X in 2022, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Yams Production in ASEAN
In value terms, yams production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 46%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of yams production was the Philippines (X tons), accounting for 65% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), twofold.
In the Philippines, yams production shrank by an average annual rate of -1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Myanmar (+0.6% per year) and Vietnam (+0.7% per year).
The average yams yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -1.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The yams harvested area totaled X ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 1.8% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, shipments abroad of yams decreased by -6.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 278% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, yams exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 217% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the major exporters of yams in 2022, recording near 40% and 37% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), creating a 20% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest yams supplier in ASEAN, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 13% share.
In Vietnam, yams exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+24.1% per year) and Malaysia (+1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 43%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+19.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Yams Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, approx. X tons of yams were imported in ASEAN; waning by -7.8% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, yams imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +6.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Malaysia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), comprising a 37% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +9.7%).
In value terms, the largest yams importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X).
In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +9.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-0.4%).
