The ASEAN zinc ores and concentrates market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 37% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of zinc ores and concentrates was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, zinc ores and concentrates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 58%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), generating an 18% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +61.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest zinc ores and concentrates supplying countries in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), together accounting for 98% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +66.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 41% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Zinc Ores And Concentrates

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of zinc ores and concentrates imported in ASEAN surged to X tons, picking up by 104% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 649% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc ores and concentrates imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand represented the largest importer of zinc ores and concentrates in ASEAN, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 67% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to zinc ores and concentrates imports into Thailand stood at -30.1%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+50.9%) and Vietnam (+26.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+19 p.p.), Malaysia (+7.3 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-29.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 93% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, which accounted for a further 2.3%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +37.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -22.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 185% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
