India (X tons) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 77% of total volume. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), sixfold. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.2% share.
In India, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+38.0% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+3.7% per year).
The average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -2.7% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Asia reached X ha, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the harvested area showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to anise, badian, fennel and coriander production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, shipments abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -22.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -25.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 16%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
India dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), making up a 9.7% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and China (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from India stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+28.1%), Vietnam (+13.5%), Turkey (+9.0%), Iran (+7.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.0%) and China (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Afghanistan (+3.3 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Syrian Arab Republic (-1.8 p.p.) and India (-4.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.2% share.
In India, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+11.2% per year) and Vietnam (+17.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), China (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) represented the key importer of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in Asia, committing 49% of total import. It was followed by Indonesia (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together making up a 28% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +64.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 47% of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +71.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
