Apple Market Size in Asia

After four years of growth, the Asian apple market decreased by -2.9% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Apple Production in Asia

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +19.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple exports stood at $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

China represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 51% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Iran (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+19.9%), Afghanistan (+18.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+18.0%), Japan (+17.1%), Iran (+14.7%) and Azerbaijan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012-2021. Lebanon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan increased by +12, +5, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest apple supplier in Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+22.6% per year) and Japan (+15.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of apples were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons), followed by Bangladesh (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the key importers of apples, together generating 68% of total imports. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +13.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apple importing markets in Asia were India ($X), Indonesia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together comprising 30% of total imports. Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Nepal and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +19.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
