Areca Nut Market Size in Asia

For the fifth year in a row, the Asian areca nut market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Areca Nut Production in Asia

In value terms, areca nut production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 74%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

India (X tons) remains the largest areca nut producing country in Asia, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, areca nut production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (X tons), fourfold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8% share.

In India, areca nut production increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bangladesh (+3.3% per year) and Myanmar (+2.3% per year).

In 2022, the average areca nut yield in Asia declined to X tons per ha, which is down by -5.5% against 2021 figures. In general, the yield showed a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 7.1%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of areca nuts were harvested in Asia; waning by -2.6% compared with 2021. The total harvested area indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, areca nut harvested area increased by +53.4% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 20%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Areca Nut Exports

Exports in Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of areca nuts were exported in Asia; with a decrease of -27% against the year before. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, areca nut exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Indonesia was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), India (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons), together achieving a 48% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of areca nuts. At the same time, India (+37.2%), Myanmar (+31.9%), Thailand (+5.3%) and Sri Lanka (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +37.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+15 p.p.), India (+8.6 p.p.) and Thailand (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -9.8% and -18% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest areca nut supplier in Asia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Myanmar ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia stood at +8.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Myanmar (+39.8% per year) and Thailand (+7.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, areca nut export price increased by +120.4% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+14.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Areca Nut Imports

Imports in Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of areca nuts increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, areca nut imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 91%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and India (X tons) represented the largest importers of areca nuts in 2022, amounting to approx. 39% and 30% of total imports, respectively. China (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Bangladesh (7.3%). The following importers - Iran (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +90.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported areca nuts in Asia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +40.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+98.7% per year) and Iran (+1.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
