Artichoke Market Size in Asia

The Asian artichoke market was estimated at $X in 2022, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Artichoke Production in Asia

In value terms, artichoke production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 83%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest artichoke producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 53% of total volume. Moreover, artichoke production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), twofold. Iran (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 12% share.

In China, artichoke production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkey (+2.1% per year) and Iran (-0.2% per year).

The average artichoke yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 6.7%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of artichokes, when their volume decreased by -34.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 51%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In 2022, Lebanon (X tons), distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the key exporters of artichokes, together achieving 84% of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 9.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +46.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest artichoke supplying countries in Asia were Lebanon ($X), Singapore ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Singapore, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 64%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, artichoke imports in Asia fell remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -21.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artichoke imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Turkey dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Lebanon (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each reached a 7.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to artichoke imports into Turkey stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+18.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.1%) and Kuwait (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Lebanon (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 52% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +22.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
