In 2021, the Asian barbed wire market increased by 8.5% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, posted moderate growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of barbed wire and entanglements, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +100.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, barbed wire exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China represented the main exporter of barbed wire and entanglements in Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Thailand (5.5%). The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to barbed wire exports from China stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+33.1%), Turkey (+9.1%) and Thailand (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +33.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+10 p.p.), Turkey (+4.6 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest barbed wire supplier in Asia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 2.7% share.

In China, barbed wire exports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+8.7% per year) and Thailand (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of barbed wire and entanglements decreased by -15.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barbed wire imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons), distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) were the major importers of barbed wire and entanglements, together making up 62% of total imports. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons), India (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Israel (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.1%), Thailand (+25.7%), Myanmar (+19.2%), India (+12.8%), South Korea (+8.3%), Malaysia (+7.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +29.1% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan and Iraq experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Israel (-5.5%), Singapore (-11.4%) and Oman (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines, Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Iraq increased by +22, +10, +4.5, +4.5, +3.6, +2.7, +2.2, +2.1 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest barbed wire importing markets in Asia were the Philippines ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 36% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +27.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
