Barley Market Size in Asia

The Asian barley market declined rapidly to $X in 2022, waning by -22.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Barley Production in Asia

In value terms, barley production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 29%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of barley production, comprising approx. 33% of total volume. Moreover, barley production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. Iran (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+7.3% per year) and Iran (+0.4% per year).

The average barley yield rose rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 8.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the barley yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of barley were harvested in Asia; with an increase of 7.8% on 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 11%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of barley was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barley exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 81%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the largest exporter of barley, constituting 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together creating a 26% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barley exports, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Turkey increased by +22 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest barley supplier in Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, barley exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+12.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley export price increased by +71.5% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of barley, when their volume decreased by -47.3% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 65%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China represented the key importer of barley in Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. Iran (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (9.6%), Japan (7.9%), Jordan (5.9%) and Thailand (4.8%). The following importers - Kuwait (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Israel (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+71.4%), the Philippines (+57.9%), Turkey (+34.7%), Qatar (+19.9%), Vietnam (+16.8%), Kuwait (+8.8%), Jordan (+2.1%), Iran (+1.9%) and Israel (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +71.4% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (+22 p.p.), Turkey (+9.2 p.p.), Thailand (+4.7 p.p.), Iran (+2.7 p.p.), Kuwait (+2.1 p.p.), Vietnam (+1.9 p.p.), the Philippines (+1.8 p.p.) and Qatar (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported barley in Asia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +10.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+35.0% per year) and Japan (+0.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
