Baryte Market Size in Asia

The Asian baryte market was estimated at $X in 2021, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, baryte production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 66%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of barytes were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baryte exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kazakhstan (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest baryte supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), India ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 88% of total exports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan, which together accounted for a further 6.7%.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +19.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of barytes were imported in Asia; which is down by -28.9% against 2020. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, baryte imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Saudi Arabia represented the key importer of barytes in Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 33% of total imports in 2021. Kuwait (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Indonesia (8.1%), Malaysia (7%), the United Arab Emirates (6.1%) and Oman (5.5%). Thailand (X tons), South Korea (X tons), China (X tons), Japan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Saudi Arabia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+48.9%), Qatar (+19.3%), Turkey (+18.1%), Kuwait (+5.7%) and South Korea (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +48.9% from 2012-2021. Oman experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-3.2%), Malaysia (-5.3%), Indonesia (-6.7%), Thailand (-8.6%), Japan (-8.7%) and Azerbaijan (-11.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kuwait (+7.8 p.p.), China (+2.8 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.), Turkey (+1.7 p.p.) and Qatar (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-1.5 p.p.), Azerbaijan (-2.2 p.p.), Thailand (-2.3 p.p.) and Indonesia (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported barytes in Asia, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9.5% share.

In Saudi Arabia, baryte imports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kuwait (+6.0% per year) and Indonesia (-6.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
