In 2022, the Asian beet-pulp and bagasse market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of beet-pulp and bagasse decreased by -41.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 57% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Thailand (9.9%), Vietnam (6.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (4.9%). Indonesia (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beet-pulp and bagasse exports from Turkey stood at +82.2%. At the same time, India (+98.4%), Indonesia (+43.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+28.5%), Yemen (+15.5%) and Thailand (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +98.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+57 p.p.), India (+12 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+4.6 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.9 p.p.), Thailand (+3 p.p.) and Yemen (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -3.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest beet-pulp and bagasse supplier in Asia, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +86.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+3.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+26.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 128% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Asia

For the fourth consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of beet-pulp and bagasse, which increased by 3.8% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest levels of beet-pulp and bagasse imports in 2022 were China (X tons), Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together finishing at 89% of total import. Cyprus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +98.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Japan ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
