In 2021, the Asian bismuth market decreased by -1.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of bismuth increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +52.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bismuth exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the major exporter of bismuth, mixing up 73% of total exports. South Korea (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (5.3%). Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+117.8%), Kazakhstan (+24.1%), Japan (+19.3%), South Korea (+12.3%) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +117.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Korea, Kazakhstan, Vietnam and Japan increased by +5, +4, +2.6 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest bismuth supplier in Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.8% share.

In China, bismuth exports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-0.4% per year) and Japan (+15.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Hong Kong SAR represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 32% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by China (11%), Japan (9.8%), Vietnam (8.7%), India (5.9%), South Korea (5.8%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +137.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 58% of total imports. Vietnam, Japan, India, Taiwan (Chinese) and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +53.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
