For the eleventh consecutive year, the Asian blueberry and cranberry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 15% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Blueberry And Cranberry Production in Asia
In value terms, blueberry and cranberry production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 151%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of blueberry and cranberry production, comprising approx. 67% of total volume. Moreover, blueberry and cranberry production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Georgia (X tons), with an 8.2% share.
In Turkey, blueberry and cranberry production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Azerbaijan (+1.6% per year) and Georgia (+3.6% per year).
The average blueberry and cranberry yield expanded remarkably to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 6.6% on the year before. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 14%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the blueberry and cranberry harvested area in Asia dropped to X ha, falling by -3.6% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to blueberry and cranberry production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Asia
In 2022, overseas shipments of blueberries and cranberries decreased by -7.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 150% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 161%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Georgia (X tons), creating a 6% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Hong Kong SAR increased at an average annual rate of +52.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Georgia (+134.9%) and Lebanon (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Georgia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +134.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR and Georgia increased by +57 and +6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Georgia ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports.
In Hong Kong SAR, blueberry and cranberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +56.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Georgia (+124.5% per year) and Lebanon (+24.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blueberry and cranberry export price increased by +10.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 44%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia
Blueberry and cranberry imports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2022, increasing by 14% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main importer of blueberries and cranberries, constituting 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), comprising a 29% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +91.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Singapore, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), the United Arab Emirates and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +96.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
