Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, book and brochure exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China represented the major exporter of books, brochures and similar printed matter in Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was near 54% of total exports in 2022. Hong Kong SAR (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total exports. Turkey (X units), South Korea (X units), India (X units), Lebanon (X units) and Singapore (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+12.2%) and South Korea (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-1.3%), Malaysia (-2.2%), India (-10.8%), Hong Kong SAR (-10.9%) and Singapore (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Turkey and South Korea increased by +13, +3.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest book and brochure supplier in Asia, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with an 8.2% share.

In China, book and brochure exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-9.6% per year) and India (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, book and brochure imports in Asia declined dramatically to X units, falling by -35.2% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, book and brochure imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 7.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR was the main importer of books, brochures and similar printed matter in Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 32% of total imports in 2022. China (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X units), Singapore (X units) and India (X units). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X units), Japan (X units), the Philippines (X units), South Korea (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), Thailand (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR decreased at an average annual rate of -13.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+57.6%), Kazakhstan (+4.9%) and China (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +57.6% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.3%), India (-2.9%), Japan (-3.1%), South Korea (-3.8%), the United Arab Emirates (-5.6%), Malaysia (-5.9%), the Philippines (-8.2%) and Singapore (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Uzbekistan, India, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Malaysia increased by +5.6, +2.3, +2.2, +1.9, +1.6 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 42% of total imports. Singapore, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, India, Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +55.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, rising by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, book and brochure import price increased by +56.0% against 2013 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
