China (X tons) remains the largest cabbage producing country in Asia, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), fourfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.5% share.
In China, cabbage production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+1.1% per year) and South Korea (+0.9% per year).
The average cabbage yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021 figures. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 2.5%. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, overseas shipments of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by -14.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -25.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cabbage exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
China represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), achieving an 11% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Iran (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+39.3%), Uzbekistan (+28.4%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+22.4%), Vietnam (+10.3%), South Korea (+3.9%) and Malaysia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+11 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -7.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Asia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 3.6% share.
In China, cabbage exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+31.5% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+17.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -16.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of cabbage and other brassicas were imported in Asia; which is down by -18.2% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cabbage imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented the major importers of cabbage and other brassicas, together creating 81% of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +51.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cabbage and other brassicas in Asia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.
