In 2022, overseas shipments of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by -14.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -25.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

China represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), achieving an 11% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Iran (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+39.3%), Uzbekistan (+28.4%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+22.4%), Vietnam (+10.3%), South Korea (+3.9%) and Malaysia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+11 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -7.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Asia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 3.6% share.

In China, cabbage exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+31.5% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+17.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -16.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
