For the fourth year in a row, the Asian calcareous building stone market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of calcareous building stone increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, calcareous building stone exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 58%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Philippines represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 61% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Vietnam (12%). The following exporters - Iran (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each reached a 9.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calcareous building stone exports from the Philippines stood at +20.0%. At the same time, Iraq (+111.1%), India (+47.5%), Vietnam (+33.1%) and Iran (+24.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +111.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkey (-23.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+37 p.p.), India (+14 p.p.), Vietnam (+10 p.p.), Iraq (+3 p.p.) and Iran (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -63.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest calcareous building stone supplying countries in Asia were India ($X), Vietnam ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. Iran, Turkey and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +79.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of calcareous building stone decreased by -45.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 210%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, calcareous building stone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Cambodia (X tons) and China (X tons) represented the key importers of calcareous building stone in 2021, resulting at near 43% and 39% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Qatar (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Qatar (with a CAGR of +83.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcareous building stone in Asia, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +11.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cambodia (+51.9% per year) and Jordan (+19.4% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 130% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
