The Asian paperboard case material market totaled $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.4% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of paperboard case materials decreased by -15.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after nine years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paperboard case material exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), India (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), China (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together accounting for 96% of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +50.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 44% of total exports. China, India, South Korea, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 52%.
India, with a CAGR of +46.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 36%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of paperboard case materials decreased by -3.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 54%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paperboard case material imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.5%). Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paperboard case materials imports, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+18.4%), India (+8.1%), Bangladesh (+5.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.9%), Malaysia (+3.8%) and the Philippines (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Israel and Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-1.9%) and Saudi Arabia (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Thailand increased by +39 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paperboard case materials in Asia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +21.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+2.5% per year) and the Philippines (+4.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
