Cement Clinker Market Size in Asia

The Asian cement clinker market stood at $X in 2022, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -5.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cement clinker production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of cement clinker decreased by -20.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 52%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cement clinker exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the main exporter of cement clinker in Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 36% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (9.7%), Thailand (9%), the United Arab Emirates (8.8%), Japan (6.4%) and Iran (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cement clinker exports from Vietnam stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Indonesia (+53.0%), Turkey (+11.8%), Iran (+11.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +53.0% from 2012-2022. Japan and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Indonesia (+9.5 p.p.), Vietnam (+9 p.p.), Turkey (+6 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3.2 p.p.) and Iran (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-4.1 p.p.) and Thailand (-5.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier in Asia, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9.3% share.

In Vietnam, cement clinker exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+12.3% per year) and Indonesia (+52.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Iran ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cement clinker, when their volume decreased by -35.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cement clinker imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) represented the key importers of cement clinker, together creating 73% of total imports. The following importers - Oman (X tons), India (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Israel (X tons), Georgia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +50.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cement clinker importing markets in Asia were Bangladesh ($X), China ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +56.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
