Non-Electric Chainsaw Market Size in Asia

After five years of decline, the Asian non-electric chainsaw market increased by 37% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor, when their volume decreased by -16.5% to X units. In general, exports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

China prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Japan (X units) held a little share of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor exports, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +4.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest non-electric chainsaw supplier in Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while China totaled $X per unit.

Imports in Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor decreased by -10.4% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

India represented the largest importer of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor in Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X units), Thailand (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together committing a 22% share of total imports. Indonesia (X units), China (X units), Uzbekistan (X units), Singapore (X units), South Korea (X units), Japan (X units) and Vietnam (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-electric chainsaw imports into India stood at +21.9%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+34.0%), Indonesia (+12.5%), Thailand (+11.4%), Malaysia (+5.6%) and China (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012-2022. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-1.8%), Japan (-3.0%), Turkey (-7.6%) and Vietnam (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Uzbekistan, Thailand and Indonesia increased by +34, +3.6, +3.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-electric chainsaw importing markets in Asia were Indonesia ($X), India ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. Turkey, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +46.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
