Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in Asia
For the fifth year in a row, the Asian cherry and sour cherry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 5% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Asia
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Turkey (X tons) remains the largest cherry and sour cherry producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 52% of total volume. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey amounted to +3.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (-2.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+10.8% per year).
The average cherry and sour cherry yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cherry and sour cherry yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cherries and sour cherries production in Asia amounted to X ha, remaining stable against 2021. In general, the harvested area showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cherry and sour cherry production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -9.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 78%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR was the key exporter of cherries and sour cherries in Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together constituting a 28% share of total exports.
Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cherries and sour cherries exports, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan increased by +47, +5 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier in Asia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 2.8% share.
In Hong Kong SAR, cherry and sour cherry exports increased at an average annual rate of +29.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-1.6% per year) and Azerbaijan (+15.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry export price increased by +86.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries
Imports in Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries and sour cherries were imported in Asia; waning by -5.6% on 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
China represented the major importer of cherries and sour cherries in Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), constituting a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each finished at a 4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in Asia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 30% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 2.8% share.
In China, cherry and sour cherry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+18.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
