In 2021, the Asian chestnut market increased by 0.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a slight slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Chestnut Production in Asia

In value terms, chestnut production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest chestnut producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, chestnut production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+2.8% per year) and South Korea (-1.4% per year).

The average chestnut yield reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, almost unchanged from 2020. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 1.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chestnut yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the chestnut harvested area in Asia dropped to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 5.6% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of chestnuts decreased by -2.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (11%).

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chestnuts. At the same time, Turkey (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+9.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest chestnut supplier in Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled -1.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+8.9% per year) and South Korea (-7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chestnuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 9.5% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) represented the largest importer of chestnuts in Asia, making up 91% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chestnut importing markets in Asia were China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +71.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
