Chicken Meat Market Size in Asia

After four years of growth, the Asian chicken meat market decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of chicken meat production, accounting for 34% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), fourfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+9.2% per year) and India (+3.5% per year).

The average chicken meat yield fell slightly to X kg per head in 2021, which is down by -1.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Asia; approximately mirroring 2020. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the number of producing animals increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports in Asia

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of chicken meat increased by 47% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicken meat exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 56% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by China (9.1%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken meat exports from Turkey stood at +16.2%. At the same time, Iran (+43.9%), Saudi Arabia (+19.0%), Thailand (+16.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+14.0%) and China (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-23.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+32 p.p.), Thailand (+9.9 p.p.), Iran (+1.8 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-2.7 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-44.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest chicken meat supplying countries in Asia were Turkey ($X), Thailand ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 83% of total exports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong SAR and Iran, which together accounted for a further 9.4%.

Iran, with a CAGR of +48.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chicken meat imports stood at X tons in 2021, remaining stable against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 9.8%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, chicken meat imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Japan (X tons), Iraq (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented the key importers of chicken meat, together generating 63% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken meat imports into China stood at +13.3%. At the same time, the Philippines (+14.9%), Iraq (+5.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.2%), Japan (+3.8%), Yemen (+3.3%), South Korea (+2.9%), Kuwait (+2.4%) and Kazakhstan (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.4%), Vietnam (-2.7%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, the Philippines and Iraq increased by +13, +3.8 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken meat in Asia, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +16.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+0.1% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
