The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 161%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, chicory exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 144%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest chicory supplier in Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In India, chicory exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+51.7% per year) and Myanmar (+1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 79%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas purchases of chicory increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 271%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chicory imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 249%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Yemen (X tons) was the largest importer of chicory, creating 67% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (11%) and China (7.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicory imports into Yemen stood at -7.2%. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+30.8%), Vietnam (+13.9%) and China (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Vietnam (+11 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+10 p.p.) and China (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Yemen (-23.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest chicory importing markets in Asia were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Yemen ($X), together comprising 88% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +41.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 127% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate strong growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
