The Asian coffee extract market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, increasing by 6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, coffee extract production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, when their volume increased by 9.4% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, coffee extract exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) represented the major exporter of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, achieving 35% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), India (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Japan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coffee extract supplying countries in Asia were Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by India, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 32%.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +40.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 4.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coffee extract imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2021, rising by 7.8% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coffee extract imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The Philippines represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 30% of total imports. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkey (X tons), Japan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - together made up 34% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee extract imports into the Philippines stood at +9.0%. At the same time, China (+17.1%), Turkey (+13.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+10.1%), Hong Kong SAR (+9.7%), Indonesia (+6.3%), Kazakhstan (+6.1%), Japan (+4.3%), Malaysia (+3.7%), Saudi Arabia (+3.4%), South Korea (+2.1%), Singapore (+1.6%) and Thailand (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. China (+3.9 p.p.), the Philippines (+3.8 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -1.9%, -2.1% and -2.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 37% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +19.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 5.5%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
