Green Coffee Market Size in Asia
The Asian green coffee market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Green Coffee Production in Asia
In value terms, green coffee production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of green coffee production was Vietnam (X tons), comprising approx. 58% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Vietnam stood at +1.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Indonesia (+1.0% per year) and India (+0.1% per year).
The average green coffee yield rose notably to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 5.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coffee (green) production in Asia shrank slightly to X ha, flattening at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 1.8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green coffee production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in Asia
In 2022, overseas shipments of coffee (green) increased by 4.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, green coffee exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Vietnam represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 60% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by India (14%). The following exporters - China (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green coffee exports from Vietnam stood at -3.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.7%) and India (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.1%) and China (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+4.8 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -8.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +2.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of coffee (green) increased by 4.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, green coffee imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Japan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 28% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by China (8%), India (7.5%), Malaysia (7.3%), Turkey (5.9%) and Thailand (4.6%). Saudi Arabia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of coffee (green). At the same time, Turkey (+14.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.3%), Thailand (+8.1%), China (+7.3%), South Korea (+5.8%), Vietnam (+5.7%), India (+5.3%), Saudi Arabia (+4.2%), Malaysia (+3.7%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+3.8 p.p.), South Korea (+3 p.p.), China (+2.6 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2.9 p.p.) and Japan (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 59% share of total imports. Turkey, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
