In 2021, overseas shipments of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, colour lake exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -9.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+33.9%), China (+13.9%) and Japan (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +33.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-2.6%), Turkey (-2.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+13 p.p.), China (+5.7 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese) saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -10.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest colour lake supplier in Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 3.4% share.

In India, colour lake exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-1.9% per year) and China (+22.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, colour lake imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes, namely China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest colour lake importing markets in Asia were Bangladesh ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +15.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+14.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
