It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X units), China (X units) and India (X units), together committing a 55% share of total exports. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, condom imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +33.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 51%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) represented the major importer of condoms (sheath contraceptives), making up 29% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Indonesia (7.2%), the United Arab Emirates (6.1%), Turkey (5.6%), Malaysia (4.8%) and Bangladesh (4.5%). Vietnam (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), Japan (X units), South Korea (X units), Thailand (X units) and Pakistan (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to condom imports into China stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+11.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+8.3%), Japan (+8.0%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.3%), Turkey (+2.7%), Indonesia (+1.7%) and South Korea (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-1.1%), Bangladesh (-4.3%), Vietnam (-5.8%), Thailand (-6.6%) and Malaysia (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+7.7 p.p.), China (+6 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3 p.p.) and Japan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -1.9%, -2.6% and -4.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 58% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +19.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per thousand units, rising by 9.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, condom import price increased by +62.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per thousand units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
