After two years of growth, the Asian copper foil market decreased by -18.3% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Copper Foil Production in Asia
In value terms, copper foil production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of copper foil, when their volume decreased by -8.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, copper foil exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the key exporters of copper foil, together mixing up 91% of total exports. The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - each finished at a 4.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total exports. South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Among the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +11.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper foil export price increased by +52.6% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2022, overseas purchases of copper foil decreased by -17.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, copper foil imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 43% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (7.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (6.7%), Thailand (6.4%) and India (5.4%). Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into China decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+15.9%), India (+8.9%), Thailand (+6.7%), Japan (+4.7%), South Korea (+3.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +15.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Korea (+6 p.p.), Japan (+3.7 p.p.), Thailand (+3.6 p.p.), India (+3.5 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.9 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper foil in Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +2.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+4.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
