The Asian cottonseed market declined slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced downturn. For the fourth year in a row, Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of cottonseed, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 125%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, cottonseed exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 101%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 57% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (8.9%) and Israel (4.5%). South Korea (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Azerbaijan increased at an average annual rate of +34.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+131.5%), Kazakhstan (+21.1%), Israel (+14.9%), Myanmar (+12.4%), Indonesia (+10.1%) and Turkey (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +131.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Azerbaijan (+45 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+5.9 p.p.) and South Korea (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2.6 p.p.) and Turkey (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cottonseed supplying countries in Asia were Turkey ($X), Azerbaijan ($X) and Israel ($X), together comprising 76% of total exports. Kazakhstan, South Korea, Indonesia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +63.6% from 2012-2022. South Korea and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+3.8 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China, South Korea and Japan saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -3.3% and -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cottonseed in Asia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.

In China, cottonseed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+1.6% per year) and Japan (+0.4% per year).
