In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Asian dichloromethane market, when its value increased by 16% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, exports of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in Asia expanded significantly to X tons, surging by 10% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

China dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 72% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (7.7%) and Japan (7.3%).

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dichloromethane (methylene chloride) exports, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012 to 2021. In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest dichloromethane supplier in Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.8% share.

In China, dichloromethane exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+3.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.4% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 51% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Dichloromethane imports shrank slightly to X tons in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

India represented the largest importer of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together committing a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2012-2021. Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam, Turkey and India increased by +4, +3.9 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), Turkey ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 57% share of total imports. Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Israel, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +13.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 47% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
