Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, diethanolamine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of diethanolamine and its salts, comprising 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together generating an 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diethanolamine exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +11.1%. At the same time, Singapore (+36.9%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012-2021. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+23 p.p.) and Singapore (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -8.6% and -11.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest diethanolamine supplier in Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia amounted to +3.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-0.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Diethanolamine Imports

In 2021, supplies from abroad of diethanolamine and its salts decreased by -11.1% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, diethanolamine imports rose to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 58% of total imports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Thailand (7%) and Singapore (4.8%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+39.4%), Thailand (+31.2%), Singapore (+14.2%), Turkey (+11.1%) and India (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+5.7 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Korea saw its share reduced by -3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diethanolamine and its salts in Asia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+5.5% per year) and Turkey (+10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
