The Asian durum wheat market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Durum Wheat Production in Asia
In value terms, durum wheat production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -15.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 50%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (X tons), India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), with a combined 79% share of total production. Turkey, Kazakhstan, Iran and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average durum wheat yield in Asia amounted to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the durum wheat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The durum wheat harvested area totaled X ha in 2022, standing approx. at the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 3.6%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of durum wheat, when their volume increased by 0.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 107%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the major exporter of durum wheat in Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 39% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by India (14%), Iran (12%), Turkey (11%) and Syrian Arab Republic (4.8%). Lebanon (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+105.4%), Syrian Arab Republic (+8.4%), Iran (+4.9%) and Pakistan (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +105.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-9.6%) and India (-28.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and Syrian Arab Republic increased by +26, +13, +11, +11 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier in Asia, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+100.3% per year) and India (-27.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +80.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of durum wheat decreased by -23.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 45% of total imports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (10%), Jordan (8.4%), Lebanon (7.1%) and Yemen (5.3%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +188.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest durum wheat importing markets in Asia were China ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +132.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
