In 2021, the Asian capacitor market decreased by -5.1% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption saw a slight slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, capacitor exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.6% against 2018 indices. China represented the key exporter of electrical capacitors in Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Japan (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together committing a 40% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and India (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to capacitor exports from China stood at +4.4%. At the same time, the Philippines (+28.3%), Malaysia (+7.2%), Thailand (+5.7%), Indonesia (+5.3%), Japan (+3.7%) and South Korea (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.0%), India (-1.6%) and Singapore (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+4.2 p.p.), the Philippines (+2.7 p.p.) and Malaysia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -6.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest capacitor supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a combined 69% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and India, which together accounted for a further 31%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 25%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), Singapore (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main importers of electrical capacitors, together comprising 83% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
