Flax Fiber Market Size in Asia
The Asian flax fiber market soared to $X in 2022, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.0% against 2020 indices. Flax Fiber Production in Asia
In value terms, flax fiber production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 61%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of flax fiber production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total production.
In China, flax fiber production declined by an average annual rate of -10.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
The average flax fiber yield dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -2.4% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 134% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the flax fiber yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of flax fiber production in Asia rose modestly to X ha, growing by 2.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to flax fiber production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of flax fiber decreased by -35.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, flax fiber exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) and India (X tons) represented the largest exporters of flax fiber in Asia, together recording near 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together comprising a 21% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest flax fiber supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), India ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 86% of total exports. Pakistan and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+26.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2022, the amount of flax fiber imported in Asia expanded to X tons, with an increase of 2.2% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, flax fiber imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) represented the main importer of flax fiber, committing 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), comprising an 18% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fiber imports into China stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Vietnam (+143.9%), India (+21.1%) and Turkey (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +143.9% from 2012-2022. India (+14 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China saw its share reduced by -15.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flax fiber in Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +9.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+23.2% per year) and Turkey (+12.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
