Ginger Market Size in Asia

The Asian ginger market declined to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.9% against the previous year. Ginger Production in Asia

India (X tons) remains the largest ginger producing country in Asia, accounting for 55% of total volume. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 48%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -43.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

China represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and India (X tons), together achieving a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger exports from China stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Thailand (+13.7%) and India (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012-2022. In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -21.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of ginger decreased by -9.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, ginger imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -32.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) represented roughly 38% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and India (X tons), together making up a 40% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons), China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +67.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in Asia, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 9.4% share.

In Japan, ginger imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+7.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+4.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -22.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton.
