In 2022, the Asian glass in the mass market increased by 56% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), India (X tons), Israel (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the major exporters of glass in the mass, together generating 64% of total exports. Thailand (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +67.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest glass in the mass supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports. Israel, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, South Korea, Singapore, Cambodia, Nepal and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

Among the main exporting countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +65.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, glass in the mass imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33%. In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the major importer of glass in the mass, constituting 31% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), India (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together constituting a 52% share of total imports. Japan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+74.7%), Thailand (+18.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+16.1%) and Indonesia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +74.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Japan (-2.6%) and India (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+14 p.p.), Thailand (+6.2 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and India saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3%, -3.3% and -15.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest glass in the mass importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +44.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -33.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 63%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
