The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012-2021. Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+36 p.p.), South Korea (+16 p.p.) and India (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -44.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total imports. India, Hong Kong SAR, Jordan and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

India, with a CAGR of +38.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
