Grape Market Size in Asia
The Asian grape market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, increasing by 3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Grape Production in Asia
In value terms, grape production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, accounting for 46% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 12% share.
In China, grape production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkey (-0.7% per year) and India (+3.9% per year).
The average grape yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 1.7% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.3%. Over the period under review, the grape yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the grape harvested area in Asia rose significantly to X ha, surging by 5% against the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 7.3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grape production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Grape Exports
Exports in Asia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of grapes, when their volume decreased by -1.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, grape exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the four major exporters of grapes, namely China, India, Uzbekistan and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Afghanistan (5.3%). Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in Asia, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 12% share.
In China, grape exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+8.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-1.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of grapes decreased by -9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grape imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - the Philippines (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each finished at a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 42% share of total imports. Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
Among the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +42.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
