Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major exporter of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons) and India (X tons), together constituting a 41% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+13.5%), Vietnam (+12.3%), Oman (+11.4%), India (+4.5%) and Japan (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 9.4% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Asia expanded rapidly to X tons, growing by 5.5% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

India dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports. Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+13.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.9%), Malaysia (+9.3%), Indonesia (+8.6%), South Korea (+6.2%), Vietnam (+4.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+4.0%) and Bangladesh (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2021. Japan and Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +17 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9.4% share.
