The Asian hazelnut market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of hazelnut production was Turkey (X tons), comprising approx. 85% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Georgia (X tons), with a 3.3% share.
In Turkey, hazelnut production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+6.4% per year) and Georgia (+1.5% per year).
The average hazelnut yield rose sharply to X tons per ha in 2021, with an increase of 7.2% against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of hazelnuts production in Asia dropped modestly to X ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Hazelnut exports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 53% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 61%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Georgia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together comprising a 31% share of total exports. Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Georgia stood at +15.6%. At the same time, Armenia (+241.0%), Azerbaijan (+34.3%) and Turkey (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +241.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-32.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia increased by +56, +11, +9.4 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Georgia ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Georgia stood at +17.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+3.1% per year) and Azerbaijan (+39.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of hazelnuts imported in Asia expanded significantly to X tons, picking up by 9.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons) and China (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together mixing up 87% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +5.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+47.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-25.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
