In 2021, the amount of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms exported in Asia amounted to X tons, picking up by 14% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, inactive yeast exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 54% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Vietnam (11%), Thailand (6%) and Indonesia (5.4%). Turkey (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+128.7%), Malaysia (+61.6%), Thailand (+35.8%), Vietnam (+29.6%), Turkey (+18.9%) and South Korea (+13.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +128.7% from 2012-2021. Malaysia (+15 p.p.), Vietnam (+7 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.4 p.p.) and Thailand (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China saw its share reduced by -25.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest inactive yeast supplier in Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 6% share.
In China, inactive yeast exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+7.3% per year) and Thailand (+38.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 63%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, inactive yeast imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the major importers of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms, together mixing up 76% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), India (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +22.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+58.0%), India (+52.1%), South Korea (+25.3%), Malaysia (+13.0%), the Philippines (+11.4%), Thailand (+11.0%), Vietnam (+3.7%) and Japan (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +58.0% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.9%), Singapore (-2.2%) and Saudi Arabia (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+18 p.p.), South Korea (+9 p.p.), India (+3.8 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2.3 p.p.) and Malaysia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.9%, -3.6%, -5.3%, -7.2%, -7.3% and -9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest inactive yeast importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +51.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
