Over the period under review, exports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China (X units) and Japan (X units) represented roughly 68% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), Israel (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units), together committing a 26% share of total exports. South Korea (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +43.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in Asia, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.

In Singapore, optical radiation instruments exports increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+5.6% per year) and China (+24.1% per year).

Optical radiation instruments imports rose slightly to X units in 2022, increasing by 3.4% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, China (X units) represented the major importer of instruments using optical radiations, comprising 37% of total imports. South Korea (X units) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (8.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (5.6%), India (5%) and Japan (5%). At the same time, Vietnam (+21.6%), Thailand (+18.5%), Singapore (+16.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.6%), India (+12.9%), Indonesia (+12.1%), South Korea (+10.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+8.8%), Turkey (+7.2%), Hong Kong SAR (+4.2%) and Japan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Singapore (+4.5 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.8 p.p.), South Korea (+2.5 p.p.), Thailand (+2 p.p.), India (+1.8 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-1.6 p.p.), Japan (-4.6 p.p.) and China (-10.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 9.8% share.

In China, optical radiation instruments imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+8.8% per year) and Singapore (+20.8% per year).
