Exports in Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of kola nuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 99%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, kola nut exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 237% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 42% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took near 56% share of total exports. Bahrain (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +43.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+45.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+26.3%) and Sri Lanka (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-3.7%) and Bahrain (-29.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates increased by +42, +19, +14 and +11 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total exports.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +44.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -25.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 189%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

Kola nut imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 169% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 1,456% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, kola nut imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 3,073% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Bahrain represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), creating a 13% share of total imports. Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to kola nut imports into Bahrain stood at +125.2%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+19,140.4%) and Yemen (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +19,140.4% from 2012-2022. Bahrain (+83 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Yemen saw its share reduced by -32.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Bahrain ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported kola nuts in Asia, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with a 0.3% share of total imports.
