China represented the major exporter of labels of paper or paperboard in Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together held near 17% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+21.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+11.0%), Turkey (+6.1%), India (+4.7%), Thailand (+3.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.9%) and South Korea (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.8%) and Singapore (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates increased by +5.5, +2.9 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest paper label supplier in Asia, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +8.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-1.2% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.2% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8.8%. Indonesia (X tons) held a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (5.7%), Cambodia (5.6%), India (5.4%) and Bangladesh (5.2%). Malaysia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Japan (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), China (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paper label importing markets in Asia were Vietnam ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Cambodia ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Myanmar and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
