In 2021, the Asian laser market decreased by -23.5% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, laser production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 349% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of lasers, other than laser diodes increased by 42% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 116%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, laser exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Korea dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X units), constituting a 9.6% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Japan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes exports, with a CAGR of +61.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Japan and Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Korea increased by +73 percentage points.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest laser supplier in Asia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Korea stood at +51.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+13.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+19.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, falling by -14.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+18.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Laser Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2021, imports of lasers, other than laser diodes in Asia shrank rapidly to X units, with a decrease of -21% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, laser imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2021. Japan (X units) held a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Hong Kong SAR (5.4%). Turkey (X units) and South Korea (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes imports, with a CAGR of +55.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+6.4%) and Hong Kong SAR (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-1.1%) and South Korea (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+70 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey, Hong Kong SAR, Japan and South Korea saw its share reduced by -3.7%, -10.3%, -20.2% and -24.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lasers, other than laser diodes in Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 6.7% share.
In China, laser imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+2.2% per year) and South Korea (-0.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
