Leather Market Size in Asia

In 2021, the Asian leather market was finally on the rise to reach $X after six years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of leather were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and China (X tons) represented roughly 33% of total exports in 2021. India (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.9% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (8.6%), South Korea (7.5%), Turkey (7.2%), Hong Kong SAR (7%), Bangladesh (5%) and Thailand (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 43% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +9.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of leather, when their volume increased by 22% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the major importer of leather, constituting 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total imports. India (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of leather. At the same time, Cambodia (+16.7%), Vietnam (+4.8%), Indonesia (+2.8%) and India (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam, China and Cambodia increased by +6.2, +4.3 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather in Asia, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 11% share.

In China, leather imports declined by an average annual rate of -5.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+1.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-14.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
