Lettuce And Chicory Market Size in Asia

The Asian lettuce and chicory market amounted to $X in 2022, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. Exports in Asia

In 2022, the amount of lettuce and chicory exported in Asia declined to X tons, waning by -6.8% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 26%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 25%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 64% of total exports. Iran (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (4.7%). The following exporters - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory exports from China stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Thailand (+22.0%), Iran (+19.5%) and Malaysia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2022. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lebanon (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Iran (+12 p.p.), China (+11 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -4.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in Asia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +19.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.0% per year) and Iran (+8.6% per year).

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory importing markets in Asia were Saudi Arabia ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Taiwan (Chinese), Kuwait, South Korea, Qatar and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
