Lignite Market Size in Asia

The Asian lignite market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Lignite Production in Asia

In value terms, lignite production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Lignite exports fell to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -12.5% against the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 67%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, lignite exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Indonesia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), committing an 8.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Philippines (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier in Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, lignite exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Indonesia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (-0.6%).

Imports in Asia

In 2022, the amount of lignites imported in Asia reduced notably to X tons, dropping by -21% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, lignite imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 65%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

China dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lignite imports into China stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+22.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +2.1 percentage points.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lignites in Asia, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 1.2% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
