In 2021, the Asian lithium-ion accumulator market decreased by -5.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) was the major exporter of lithium-ion accumulators, constituting 50% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by South Korea (15%), Japan (7.7%) and Singapore (5.4%). Thailand (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+120.5%), Japan (+34.1%), Singapore (+20.4%), South Korea (+15.2%) and Hong Kong SAR (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +120.5% from 2012-2021. Japan (+5.8 p.p.), Thailand (+2.8 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -5% and -7.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest lithium-ion accumulator supplier in Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 9.7% share.

In China, lithium-ion accumulator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +22.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+12.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+16.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, lithium-ion accumulator imports in Asia surged to X units, picking up by 28% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Hong Kong SAR (X units) and China (X units) were the key importers of lithium-ion accumulators in 2021, finishing at near 28% and 25% of total imports, respectively. India (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by South Korea (6.5%), Vietnam (6.3%) and Japan (6.2%). Turkey (X units) and Indonesia (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +72.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lithium-ion accumulator importing markets in Asia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. Vietnam, Japan, India, Turkey and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +34.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, lithium-ion accumulator import price increased by +30.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
