Malt Market Size in Asia
The Asian malt market rose modestly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Malt Production in Asia
In value terms, malt production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Malt Exports
Exports in Asia
In 2021, shipments abroad of malt (not roasted) decreased by -2.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -28.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), constituting a 4.8% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, India (+31.1%) and Kazakhstan (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +31.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +3.9 percentage points.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports.
In China, malt exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+24.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 9.6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Malt Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2021, the amount of malt (not roasted) imported in Asia contracted to X tons, declining by -8.7% on 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of malt imports in 2021 were Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together reaching 54% of total import. South Korea (X tons) took a 7.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (5.7%), Singapore (4.9%), Cambodia (4.9%) and Turkey (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports. South Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +57.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 5.7%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
