Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -18.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, India (X tons) was the main exporter of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, achieving 38% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 48% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from India stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Pakistan (+51.7%), Indonesia (+28.8%), Turkey (+16.9%), South Korea (+9.3%) and the Philippines (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Pakistan (+11 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.4 p.p.), South Korea (+4.3 p.p.), Indonesia (+2.8 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.2% and -24.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier in Asia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +8.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+19.3% per year) and the Philippines (+15.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 458% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Japan (X tons), distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the major importers of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, together creating 71% of total imports. The following importers - China (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Iran (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in Asia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 2.4% share.

In Japan, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports expanded at an average annual rate of +65.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+2.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.1% per year).
